Liam Lawson is a 24-year-old New Zealand Formula 1 driver for Racing Bulls, and after a fifth place in the Singapore sprint and seventh in the Grand Prix on 11 October 2026 he sits ninth in the drivers’ championship with 75 points. What he still doesn’t have is a confirmed seat for 2027.

That is the strange shape of Lawson’s year. On track it has been his most consistent season yet, including three races back at Red Bull Racing as a stand-in. Off track, the Pukekohe-raised driver is waiting on a decision that his team boss says is coming “in the coming weeks”.

How Liam Lawson finished in Singapore

Lawson started the Grand Prix eighth, directly behind Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, and finished seventh. Combined with fifth in Saturday’s sprint, the weekend was worth 10 points, another double-points weekend for the Kiwi. Max Verstappen won the race from pole.

After the race he told Sky Sports F1 that the start was decided by tyres: “We started on the softs. Once we pulled the blankets off, and I saw he was on a medium, I knew it was game on in Turn 1.” He also called the current triple-header “probably the strongest we’ve been this season. Personally for me as well.”

Liam Lawson’s 2027 seat is still undecided

As of 12 October 2026, Lawson and his Racing Bulls team-mate Arvid Lindblad are the only two drivers on the grid without a confirmed 2027 drive, 1News reported on the eve of the Singapore sprint. Racing Bulls team boss Alan Permane said the call would come “in the coming weeks” and added, “We’re not in a rush.”

The squeeze is simple maths. Red Bull Racing has already locked in Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar for 2027, which closes the senior-team door for now, and Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov, racing in Formula 2, has been linked to a Racing Bulls seat. Permane summed it up by saying “three doesn’t fit into two”. Nothing beyond that has been announced, and we won’t report the rumour mill as fact.

Lawson has made his own position clear. Back in June he said: “If it was my decision, I’d sign something right now for next year, but it depends on a lot of things.”

What team is Liam Lawson in?

Lawson races for Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s second Formula 1 team, in car number 30. His 2026 team-mate is the British rookie Arvid Lindblad, who is 11th in the standings on 38 points, so Lawson leads the in-house battle by 37 points.

Liam Lawson’s points and results in 2026

The official Formula 1 results show Lawson scoring in 12 of the 17 Grands Prix so far. His best result is fifth in Monaco, which equals his career-best fifth from Baku in 2025.

Points include sprint points where he scored them. With six rounds left, he is 22 points behind Hadjar in eighth and 34 clear of Gasly in 10th (standings as of 12 October 2026).

Why Liam Lawson drove for Red Bull again

When Hadjar hurt his wrist training over the European summer, Red Bull called Lawson up for Zandvoort, Monza and the new Madrid circuit, the same team that had dropped him after two races in 2025. He scored seventh in the Netherlands and sixth in Spain. When Hadjar was cleared for Baku, Red Bull’s statement on Formula1.com thanked him for “his professionalism, dedication and hard work over the past three races”. Lawson’s own verdict on going back to Racing Bulls was short: “You like your own car so it’s a good feeling to be back in my car.”

How old is Liam Lawson and where is he from?

Liam Jared Lawson was born on 11 February 2002 in Hastings, which makes him 24, and he turns 25 in February 2027. He grew up in Pukekohe, south of Auckland, started karting at six and left high school early to focus on racing.

The number 30 goes back to those karting days. He has used it since he was eight, in honour of his karting mentor Ken Smith.

Liam Lawson’s parents and family

Lawson’s parents are Jared and Kristy Lawson. The family sold their home to keep his racing going, something they spoke about when they told 1News about the journey before his Red Bull debut in Melbourne. “It was hard. It wasn’t easy,” Jared said. Kristy said: “What will be, will be. But I have faith he can do it — he deserves to be here.”

Beyond his parents, Lawson keeps his family life private, and we don’t publish guesses about relatives.
