Crate Day 2026 falls on Saturday 5 December. The unofficial New Zealand beer day is held every year on the first Saturday of December, and it began as a promotion by radio station The Rock around 2009–2010. It is not a public holiday.
Online calendars do not all agree on the date this year, and at least one lists Sunday 6 December. The rule has not changed, though, so the first Saturday it is. Below is how Crate Day started, what its famous “rules” say, how much alcohol a crate actually holds, and the dates for the next few years.
When is Crate Day 2026?
Crate Day 2026 is on Saturday 5 December 2026. Next year it falls on Saturday 4 December 2027. The tradition marks the unofficial start of the Kiwi summer, and the day has always been a Saturday, so it can land anywhere from 1 to 7 December.

| 2024 | Saturday 7 December |
| 2025 | Saturday 6 December |

What is Crate Day in New Zealand?
Wikipedia describes Crate Day as an unofficial celebration held on the first Saturday of December. In practice it is a day when groups of friends buy a crate of beer, the reusable plastic “swappa crate” of large glass bottles, and spend the afternoon and evening together at a bach, a backyard or a river spot. It is a uniquely New Zealand thing, because the swappa crate itself is a New Zealand refill system: brewers wash and refill about six million of the bottles each year.
Where did Crate Day originate?
Crate Day started as a radio promotion. Rock station The Rock launched “The Rock National Crate Day”, and afternoon host Duncan Heyde became one of its best-known champions, with the station broadcasting 12 hours of coverage from midday. Sources disagree on the first year: a study in the NZ Medical Journal and the Otago Daily Times say 2009, while Wikipedia gives 2010.

The Rock stopped officially promoting the day in 2019, but by then it had taken on a life of its own. There is no official Crate Day organisation or website.
Crate Day rules and the ten commandments
The Rock published a set of ten “commandments” each year. The best known is to support “thy crate of origin”, meaning you drink the beer brewed in your own region. The headline challenge was to get through a whole crate between noon and midnight, which is why the day is said to start at midday.
That challenge is the part health workers worry about, and it is worth looking at the numbers before taking it literally.
How many standard drinks are in a crate?
A crate holds 12 bottles of 745ml beer. A study in the NZ Medical Journal worked that out as 300g of pure alcohol, or about 30 standard drinks.
- One standard drink is 10g of pure alcohol.
- Health New Zealand’s low-risk guideline is no more than five standard drinks on a single occasion for men and four for women.
- The weekly limits are 15 standard drinks for men and 10 for women.
- A full crate is around six times the single-occasion limit for a man, and twice his weekly limit.
Hospitals have noticed. Whanganui Hospital told the NZ Herald in 2020 that Crate Day was one of its busier emergency department days, mostly men aged 18 to 30, and urged people to “put mates before crates”. The Waikato study found alcohol-related emergency visits made up 6.5% of presentations on Crate Day weekends, compared with 4.6% on other weekends. The guidance from Health NZ’s alcohol.org.nz is the simplest way to keep track of what you are drinking.
Crate Day liquor bans and police warnings
Some councils and police now plan for the day. Queenstown had a 24-hour downtown alcohol ban for Crate Day 2019 after a mess on the Village Green in 2016, and Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast had temporary bans on reserves and beaches in 2017. In Canterbury, four-wheel drives in the Ashley River riverbed crushed eggs of endangered birds in 2023. Before that year’s Crate Day, NZ Police asked people to register parties, not drive after drinking and “look after yourself, and look after your mates”. Check your local council for any liquor ban before 5 December.
