Ali Pugh is married to musician Jo Barus, and the couple have three daughters, Thea, Heidi and Jemima. After filling in as TVNZ Breakfast co-host from January to March 2026, she is back where she has been for most of the past decade, reporting for 1News from Christchurch.

When TVNZ asked whether she could step back onto the Breakfast set until Tova O’Brien arrived, she did not take long to decide. “I didn’t pause. I didn’t even consult my husband before I said yes,” she told 1News in January. That quick yes is also the best clue to the questions people search about her family, because her husband was the one left minding three girls in Christchurch while she flew to Auckland every week.

Who is Ali Pugh’s husband?

Her husband is Jo Barus, a musician who plays with Sir Dave Dobbyn. In the January 2026 interview 1News described him as a full-time parent on weekdays while Pugh was presenting Breakfast, with Pugh commuting to Auckland each week and flying home for weekends.

The pair were engaged by October 2016, when a Now to Love interview introduced Barus as her fiancé. By the time their third child was born in 2021 he was being described as her husband. Pugh has not shared a wedding date, venue or photos publicly, so we do not guess them.

Is Ali Pugh still married?

Yes, as far as anything she has said. She talked about “my husband” in January 2026, and there has been no report of a separation.

Ali Pugh’s children and how old they are

Pugh and Barus have three daughters. 1News gave their ages in January 2026 as Thea 10, Heidi 7 and Jemima 4.

  • Thea (Theadora), the eldest, was still a baby in 2016 when Pugh went back to reporting part-time.
  • Heidi was two when her youngest sister was born.
  • Jemima was born at home in 2021, and faster than planned. The midwife did not make it in time, and Pugh told Now to Love, “I delivered her myself!”

On going back to a full-time TV job with young children, she said, “I think it’s good for the girls too, to see their mum working.”

How old is Ali Pugh?

Her exact date of birth has not been published. In January 2026, 1News described her and co-host Chris Chang as “both now in their late 30s”, which is the most precise public answer.

What is Ali Pugh doing now?

Her Breakfast return was always temporary. Tova O’Brien made her debut as Chris Chang’s co-host on 30 March 2026, and Pugh went back to reporting. Her 1News reporter page lists her as a Christchurch-based reporter, and her stories in 2026 have ranged from the Chatham Islands and an ancient Moriori waka to the end of greyhound racing and Christchurch’s new Te Kaha stadium getting a soundcheck with a major concert.

Is Ali Pugh the new Breakfast host?

No. As of October 2026 Breakfast is presented by Chris Chang and Tova O’Brien. Pugh’s 2026 run was a fill-in that ended when O’Brien started.

Ali Pugh on TVNZ, from round-up reporter to co-host

  • 2009 or 2010, her first real journalism job, as Breakfast’s round-up reporter. “Breakfast has been a part of my life since I started as a round-up reporter in 2009, or maybe it was 2010,” she said.
  • 2012, reporting on the Christchurch rebuild.
  • 2014–2015, Breakfast co-host alongside Rawdon Christie, a run she calls a career highlight. She lost the desk in a presenter reshuffle and later said, “I feel almost blessed with how it worked out.”
  • 2016 onwards, part-time reporter for TVNZ’s 6pm news from Christchurch while raising her daughters.
  • April 2017, added radio, co-hosting a new local breakfast show on The Hits Christchurch with Dave Fitzgerald.
  • January to March 2026, back on Breakfast with Chris Chang, whom she has known for more than ten years. “Chris and I go way back and I’m a big fan of his,” she said.
